JMB Booklet

A Booklet Honoring the Legacy of Josef Müller-Brockmann

Project Summary

This project involved creating a booklet about one of my design heroes, the legendary and influential Swiss designer Josef Müller-Brockmann, whose timeless work embodies clarity, precision, and minimalism in graphic design.

Research and Discovery

Research and Discovery Process

The research process began with studying the work of several influential designers to understand different approaches to visual communication. Each had a unique voice, but Josef Müller-Brockmann's clarity and restraint stood out to me immediately. His ability to convey meaning through structure and simplicity felt both timeless and deeply intentional, which is why I chose to focus my booklet on him.

As I explored his posters, writings, and grid systems, I gained a new appreciation for how much thought lies beneath the surface of his seemingly simple designs. His work revealed that true simplicity requires discipline, precision, and purpose. This realization shaped not only the concept of the booklet but also my own perspective on what makes design powerful—clarity born from understanding, not reduction.

Creative Challenge

Interpreting JMB's principles through my own design lens presented a creative challenge. Merging elements of Bauhaus, such as geometric shapes, primary colors, and the "form follows function" philosophy, with Müller-Brockmann's rigorous, disciplined grid systems required a thoughtful and intentional blending of styles. Balancing homage with originality meant using structured grids, restrained color palettes, and purposeful composition and visual rhythm inspired by both movements.

Project Reflections

This project deepened my respect for disciplined design and clarified the value of intentional choices. Navigating Müller-Brockmann's philosophies helped me refine my awareness of grid-based systems and their impact. I am grateful for the chance to honor his legacy, and I now approach design problems with a renewed commitment to clarity, simplicity, and purpose. The final piece reflects those ideals while allowing my own perspective and voice to come through.
